Introduction

The Mediterranean Studies Group at Hitotsubashi University was established in 1973 to engage in the interdisciplinary study of the Mediterranean world. At this time, barely any research was being carried out in Japan on the Mediterranean world. Since then, the group has held regular study meetings, hosted special lectures by internal and external speakers, and organized field research in the Mediterranean world. From its findings, the group puts together reports in Japanese and European languages, publishing them in its "Mediterranean World" magazine every two or three years. For many years the group has been assisted in its operations by scientific research grants from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. We are deeply grateful to the ministry for its extraordinary support.
